A Year in Review - 2019

Let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane, taking it back to October 10, 2019, one of the most significant dates in our history.

“We’re becoming Beyond Legal Aid! We chose the name because it both better reflects our work and the impact and vision we are trying to achieve. We really wanted to recognize that so much of our work is and needs to be not just simply providing what is viewed as legal aid, our work has to be everything communities need,” said founder Lam Ho.

If there was one word to describe the year 2019 in Beyond’s history, it would be transformation. By 2019, Beyond was a well-established organization with half a decade of service to our community partners and members since the early days of Beyond (then CALA) in October 2014.

Our Director of Programs and Operations at the time, Antonio Gutierrez, spoke about the name change being a new era for the organization:

“Changing our name to Beyond Legal Aid was a very intentional process that included staff, board of directors and community partners. The renaming and rebranding were an adjustment based on our reflections over the first five years of the organization’s practice of our model of community lawyering. We knew that for our work to go beyond the law, organizing and community partnerships are necessary. Beyond Legal Aid seemed to fit not only our values but also the work we want to accomplish collectively with community partners.”
